This magnificent black opal was originally purchased by a US soldier as an unset gem in Sydney, Australia, during World War II. After the war, he had the ring setting made into a simple bezel setting, knowing the opal needed no more adornment. The colors are bright and distinctive, with blues, greens, reds and yellows. The opal weighs an estimated 8.15 carats; the 14K setting is a finger size 6, and may be sized up or down by at least one size. Even the original box for the loose opal, from Proud’s, in Sydney, is included, although it shows a well-deserved amount of wear.
